GREYHAWK setting up for the first (and only) race of the Centerboard Yacht Club Regatta in light air on Saturday, June 12. We finished 1st of 3 boats in the "Racing B" class! Photo by Ann Blanchard for GMORA.
The crew included Bob, Matt, Eric, and me (Tim). We had sailed the boat down to Portland from Boothbay Harbor overnight Friday night, leaving Boothbay around 20:30 and arriving Portland at 06:00. We had a good breeze of 10 to 12 knots for most of the night, but coming more or less directly from where we wanted to go... so we beat out into the Gulf of Maine until we could make Portland Head Light on the opposite tack. That worked well, but in the wee hours, with about 12 miles to go, we got a 45 degree header that sent us up to Half Way Rock, and the wind speed started to drop, to basically nothing by sunrise. So we motored the last two hours. Once on a mooring off CYC, we all went down for a nap!
After the regatta, and the party, we left Portland around 18:30 Saturday, and motorsailed back to Boothbay Harbor, securing to our mooring at about 00:35 Sunday morning. Finally back to sleep!
